Actor Headshots & Portfolio Photography
An actor headshot has one job: to represent you accurately and show casting where you fit.
At Not Normal Photography, we focus on creating industry-ready images that do that job well, not just take nice photos. That often starts with two sides of the same coin: commercial and theatrical. Commercial tends to feel warmer, approachable and relatable, while theatrical leans into character, intensity and dramatic range.
For actors, your photographs need to give casting professionals a clear and believable sense of who you are and where you might fit. A strong actor image isn't about creating a character or transforming you into someone else. It's about showing your natural presence, personality and potential while leaving enough room for casting to imagine you in different roles.
Expression becomes particularly important. Small changes in the eyes, mouth, posture and intensity can completely change what an image communicates. Rather than relying on exaggerated expressions or obvious character poses, we work with subtle changes to create photographs that feel natural and engaging while revealing different aspects of your casting potential.
Wardrobe, lighting and styling are approached with the same intention. They should support what we're trying to communicate without becoming the focus of the photograph. Every element has a purpose, whether we're creating something warm and approachable or more grounded and dramatic. The photograph should draw attention to you, not what you're wearing or how it was created.
Most importantly, you still need to look like you. Actor photography should never create an unrealistic version of the person who will eventually walk into an audition or appear on a self-tape. Professional finishing can polish an image and remove temporary distractions, but your features, skin texture, age and individual characteristics remain recognizable. The goal is to present the strongest professional version of you — not manufacture someone who doesn't exist.
You also don't need to arrive knowing exactly what casting images you need or how to create the right expressions. We'll provide direction throughout the session, helping with everything from positioning and posture to expression and subtle changes in energy. The process is collaborative, but photographer-led, allowing you to concentrate on being present in front of the camera rather than worrying about whether you're "doing it right."
Whether you're approaching an agent, updating older headshots, beginning to submit for roles or building a broader set of casting images, we'll help determine what photographs will actually be useful rather than simply giving you more photographs.
Our three tiers reflect different needs and stages, but the goal stays the same: images that look like you, feel like you, and help casting see where you belong.
